What Is FIRE?
FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) means accumulating enough investments that your portfolio can sustain your living expenses indefinitely through the returns it generates. Your FIRE number = Annual Expenses ÷ Safe Withdrawal Rate. At a 4% withdrawal rate, you need 25× your annual expenses saved. So if you spend $45,000/year, your FIRE number is $1,125,000.
The Power of Savings Rate
Your savings rate is the single most important variable. At a 50% savings rate with 7% returns, you can reach FIRE in approximately 17 years regardless of income. At 70%, it's about 8 years. Track your progress with our Net Worth Calculator and maximize growth with our Compound Interest Calculator.
