How to Calculate Percentages

A percentage is a fraction of 100. The word comes from Latin "per centum" meaning "by the hundred." The three most common percentage calculations are finding a percentage of a number, finding what percentage one number is of another, and calculating percentage change.

Finding X% of Y

Multiply Y by X/100. Example: 15% of 200 = 200 × 0.15 = 30.

Finding What % X Is of Y

Divide X by Y and multiply by 100. Example: 30 is what % of 200? → 30 ÷ 200 × 100 = 15%.

Percentage Change

((New - Original) ÷ Original) × 100. Example: From 80 to 100 → (100-80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25% increase.
