How Tax Brackets Work
The US uses a progressive tax system with marginal brackets. This means only the income within each bracket is taxed at that rate — not your entire income. Moving into a higher bracket does NOT mean all your income is taxed at the higher rate.
Example: $85,000 Single Filer
First $11,925 taxed at 10% = $1,193. Next $36,550 (up to $48,475) at 12% = $4,386. Next $36,525 (up to $85,000) at 22% = $8,036. Total tax: $13,615. Effective rate: 16.0% — much lower than the 22% marginal rate.
This is why a raise never "costs more in taxes than it's worth" — only the new income is taxed at the higher rate. Use our Paycheck Calculator to see the real impact of a raise on your take-home pay.
