Choose an age and/or adjusted gross income (AGI) band to view source-published cohorts. Cohort references are not personal percentiles.

Every published figure identifies its source, period, population, unit, and statistic.

A selector is applied only when the named source publishes that dimension. Income and net worth use age cohorts; the tax module uses AGI cohorts. Spending, housing, debt-burden, and emergency-savings resilience references remain overall national observations because their sources do not publish age or AGI dimensions. No joint age-by-income estimate is inferred.

Use these source-defined national references to understand the published baseline. Run any calculator to model your own situation; calculator inputs are not used as published community benchmarks during the integrity rebuild. Start with our most popular tools:

Method and limits

This is an overall U.S. reference. Age and AGI are not published source dimensions for this row and are never used to substitute a cohort value.

For each family, total debt payments are divided by total before-tax family income for the year before the survey. The SCF assigns $100 in 2022 dollars when that income is zero or negative.

Debt payments exclude lease and rent payments. Respondent-reported real-estate loan payments may include property taxes and insurance.

The current and prior estimates use the same SCF Table 5 row, statistic, population, denominator, and unit. Changes in this percentage measure are expressed in percentage points, not as relative percent changes.

SCF estimates use survey weights. Table 5 reports point estimates for this row but no row-specific standard error, sample size, effective sample size, or distribution, so no personal percentile or rank is produced.

This descriptive reference is not an aggregate debt-service ratio, lender debt-to-income ratio, underwriting limit, affordability threshold, planning target, or financial advice.

No target value is owned by this peer model. Debt calculators remain planning tools and are never substituted for the source-published reference.

Method and limits

This is an overall U.S. consumer-unit reference. Age and AGI are not published source dimensions for this row and are never used to substitute a cohort value. BLS income-before-tax groups are not IRS AGI selectors.

A BLS consumer unit can be a family, a financially independent person, or people living together who share major expenses. It is not interchangeable with a Census household, an SCF family, or a person.

The measure is a current-dollar weighted annual mean, not a median or monthly budget. CE total expenditures include cash contributions and personal insurance and pension contributions, so this is not a consumption-only measure.

The comparison uses the revised 2023 total, correcting the earlier release. BLS reports that the 1.8% increase from 2023 to 2024 was not statistically significant at the 95% confidence level; it is not an inflation-adjusted change.

The release combines Consumer Expenditure Interview and Diary Survey estimates. BLS identifies declining response rates, underreporting measurement error, and phased questionnaire redesign; Table A publishes no row-specific standard error, sample size, or effective sample size.

This descriptive reference is not a personal cash-flow value, cost-of-living index, aggregate personal-consumption measure, savings rate, planning target, or financial advice.

Planning targets

No target value is owned by this spending reference model. Budget calculators remain planning tools and are never substituted for the source-published mean.

Method and limits

This is an overall U.S. adult reference. SHED age groups cross the application's seven age bands, and SHED family income is not adjusted gross income (AGI), so age and AGI selections are never used to substitute a cohort value.

The measure is a self-reported, post-stratification-weighted share of adults who said emergency or rainy-day savings would cover three months of their own expenses. It is not a verified account balance or liquid-asset amount.

The denominator is all adults asked EF1 in each SHED wave (base: all respondents). Three months is based on each respondent's own expenses and is not a FinCalcs adequacy rule or recommendation.

The 2025 and 2024 observations come from separate annual SHED waves and are published as separately rounded whole-number percentages. Equal displayed values do not establish equal unrounded estimates or individual stability.

Appendix B reports 12,934 unweighted EF1 respondents for 2025 and 12,295 for 2024. The 2025 cumulative response rate was 4.1 percent and the survey-wide design effect was 1.14. No EF1-specific standard error, confidence interval, or effective sample size is published; noncoverage, nonresponse, English-language participation, and item imputation remain limitations.

This measure is separate from the SHED $400 cash-equivalent emergency-expense question and from the follow-up ability to cover expenses by borrowing, selling assets, or drawing on other savings. It is not a percentile, composite score, personal target, adequacy rule, or financial advice.

Planning targets

No target value or recommended number of months is owned by this Resilience reference model. Planning calculators remain separate tools and are never substituted for the source-published share.

Methodology & Sources — source-defined and reproducible

Methodology & Sources

Each published benchmark is tied to a named source, reference period, population, unit, and statistic. Metrics that cannot be reproduced from the cited source are not displayed.

Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF)

The 2022 SCF interviewed 4,602 U.S. families and uses survey weights to estimate the national population. FinCalcs uses 2022-dollar medians. Asset balances are conditional on owning the asset unless marked otherwise; net worth includes all families. Age is the age of the SCF reference person. Cells with fewer than 11 observations are not treated as robust. The 2025 SCF was fielded in 2025; summary results are expected in late 2026.

U.S. Census Bureau

Household-income medians use CPS ASEC Table A-1. 2023 and 2024 estimates are expressed in 2024 dollars. Age refers to the householder.

Internal Revenue Service

Tax-burden references use Statistics of Income Table 3.2. The displayed ratio is aggregate total income tax divided by aggregate AGI for returns with total income tax; it is not a typical household tax rate.

Housing and mortgage sources

New-home prices use Census/HUD data via FRED MSPUS. Mortgage rates use Freddie Mac PMMS. Mortgage payments use the Mortgage Bankers Association Purchase Applications Payment Index. Different units remain separate and are not combined in one chart.

KFF and CMS

Employer-plan premiums, deductibles, and employer contribution shares use the KFF 2025 Employer Health Benefits Survey. Per-person national health expenditure uses the CMS National Health Expenditure Accounts and is not an individual household bill.

Community comparison policy

Community comparisons are unavailable while FinCalcs validates metric definitions, deduplication, time windows, minimum sample thresholds, and privacy controls. National values are never substituted for missing community data.

Directional arrows show the numeric change from the stated prior reference period. They do not claim the change is universally good or bad.
